Flamengo sporting director Jose Boto has issued a stern warning ahead of his side’s Club World Cup opener against Espérance Sportive de Tunis, calling the North African champions a "very difficult opponent".

The two sides will face off early Tuesday at 2:00 a.m. (KSA & Egypt time) in the opening match of Group D, which also includes Chelsea and LAFC.

Respect for Espérance's Style

Speaking to the press, Boto stressed the technical quality of African football:

“We’re facing a very tough team. African football is highly technical, and we’ll enjoy every match. I’m sure most critics haven’t watched a minute of their games. They play difficult football.”

Flamengo Analysts Highlight Key Threats

Flamengo’s performance analysts echoed Boto’s sentiments in a YouTube segment on the club’s official channel:

“This is a crucial match. Espérance are back-to-back Tunisian champions. They dominate possession and control tempo, especially in their domestic league.”

But they also identified potential weaknesses:

“They’re not used to playing against stronger opponents or being pushed into a defensive setup, which could be exploited by Flamengo.”

Brazilian Duo to Watch

The analysts also highlighted two Brazilian stars in the Tunisian squad:

  • Rodrigo Rodrigues – the central striker who leads the line
  • Yan Sasse – described as the team’s standout performer
