Mary McGee, a legendary figure in motorsport and the first woman to participate in road motorcycle racing and motocross in the United States, passed away on November 27, 2024, at the age of 87, reports The Sun.

McGee began her racing career as a sports car driver in 1957 and competed until 1964. From 1960 to 1976, she also participated in road motorcycle racing and motocross. She became the first woman to race in the Baja 1000 and the first woman to finish the Baja 500. In 2018, McGee was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

"Mary embodied resilience, grace, and optimism. She was a historic athlete and a motorsports pioneer who embraced life's challenges, cared deeply for others, and made time to brighten the lives of those around her. While we are deeply saddened by this loss, we are comforted knowing that her light will continue to shine in everyone she touched," said Mary’s family in a statement.

A short documentary film about her remarkable story, titled Motorcyclist Mary, was produced by legendary Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
