Financial sanctions! Punjab Kings captain fined twice in IPL for slow over-rate
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been hit with hefty financial penalties at the start of the IPL 2026 season.
Details: According to cricketmoodofficial, Iyer was slapped with significant fines for failing to maintain the required over-rate in two consecutive matches, with total penalties amounting to 3.6 million rupees.
Reports say that for the first offense, during the match against Gujarat Titans, Iyer was fined 1.2 million rupees (12 lakhs). However, things escalated in the following game against Chennai Super Kings. Since this was the captain's second violation of the season, the league's rules dictated a doubled fine, resulting in a penalty of 2.4 million rupees (24 lakhs).
The league’s disciplinary committee emphasizes that maintaining the pace of play is the captain’s responsibility, and repeated delays are unacceptable. If Punjab Kings commit a third such infraction under Iyer’s leadership, the consequences will be even more severe: a 3 million rupee fine and automatic suspension of the captain for one match.
