Financial crisis at Inter. Thuram and Dumfries may leave the club after Champions League exit
Inter's shocking elimination from the Champions League after a double defeat to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt has dealt a major blow to the Milan club's financial plans.
Details: Inter's management had banked on at least reaching the round of 16, and according to la Repubblica, the budget for next season was based on these projections. Now, with their European campaign cut short, the club needs to make up a shortfall of about 20 million euros compared to expected income.
The difference in European revenues this year has been staggering: while last season Inter earned 137 million euros from the Champions League, this time the tally has stopped at 66 million. The situation is worsened by the absence of payments from the Club World Cup, which brought in 30 million euros last year. In total, financial losses compared to last season's record figures may reach around 100 million euros, forcing president Beppe Marotta to urgently seek ways to balance the books through the transfer market.
The main candidates for sale to replenish the budget are star players Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries. Thuram, who arrived on a free transfer in 2023, could bring the club pure profit if sold. Dumfries’ situation is also uncertain: the Dutch defender recently changed agents, and his contract runs for another two seasons. In addition, significant cost-cutting is expected with the likely departures of Sommer, Acerbi, De Vrij, Darmian, and Mkhitaryan.
