Saudi Arabia was recently confirmed as the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, sparking criticism from human rights organizations due to the country's controversial human rights record. FIFA, however, insists that everything is under control.

Details: The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) sent a formal request to FIFA, raising concerns about human rights violations and demanding that independent monitors oversee the working conditions of laborers.

In response, FIFA General Secretary Mattias Grafström avoided providing a concrete solution, instead pointing to the commitments made by Saudi authorities during the bidding process. These commitments reportedly include a proposal to establish what Grafström called "a worker welfare system to ensure labor rights standards are upheld for tournament-related workers."

Reminder: A previous FIFA report classified Saudi Arabia as having a medium risk of human rights violations.
