The chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has reassured Nigerians that the country’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are still very much alive.

Dikko explained that Nigeria is currently waiting for the final decision from FIFA regarding a case involving the eligibility of players used by the DR Congo national football team.

Earlier this week, concerns grew among fans of the Nigeria national football team after FIFA released details about the upcoming intercontinental playoffs. In the announcement, DR Congo appeared among the six teams expected to battle for the last two spots at the global tournament.

However, Dikko stressed that the listing does not represent FIFA’s final verdict on the matter.

“As far as we know, FIFA has not yet announced its decision. We are watching the situation closely,” Dikko said.

“The fact that DR Congo appears on the list of teams for the playoff does not mean the case has been decided. Once FIFA releases its verdict, the situation may change.”
