A former NHL player died during a British Elite Ice Hockey League game
Yesterday, a tragic incident occurred during a British Elite Ice Hockey League match. The Sheffield Steelers were playing on the road against the Nottingham Panthers, but the match had to be halted in the second period due to an unfortunate incident involving Adam Johnson, a player from the visiting team.
Both teams' players formed a circle around him until protective screens were set up. Spectators at the Utilita Arena were asked to leave the stands as the match would not continue.
The 29-year-old American player sustained a neck laceration and was transported to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.
Following the news of the player's death, the Nottingham Panthers released the following statement:
"The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to report that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away as a result of a horrific accident at the game in Sheffield last night. The club will miss him dearly and never forget him. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding hockey player, but also a terrific teammate and an incredible human being with his whole life ahead of him. The Panthers would like to express our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his teammates, and all his friends during this incredibly difficult time. Everyone at the club, including the players, staff, management, and owners, are devastated by the news of Adam's passing."
After the tragic incident, the Elite Ice Hockey League confirmed that all the games scheduled for Sunday would be postponed.
Before joining the Nottingham Panthers, Adam Johnson had played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as in the AHL, Elitserien, and the DEL. He joined the British club in August of the current year.
