Fans boo Djokovic after withdrawing from Aus Open match, but his opponent publicly supports him
Legendary Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from his Australian Open 2025 semifinal match against Alexander Zverev. After the first set, which Zverev won in a tiebreak 7-6 (7:5), Djokovic approached the net and thanked his opponent for the game.
The decision was due to a left thigh injury that had been troubling Djokovic since his quarterfinal match against Carlos Alcaraz. In that match, Novak managed to not only play through the pain with the help of painkillers but also emerge victorious. Today, however, the pain seemed unbearable, leading the former world number one to end the match prematurely.
As the Serbian player left the court, fans responded with boos instead of applause. Djokovic gave a thumbs-up gesture, but it did little to calm the crowd.
Nevertheless, today’s opponent, Alexander Zverev, voiced his support for Djokovic immediately after the match.
“I know you paid for your tickets. But Djokovic has given everything to tennis for 25 years. He won titles here with torn muscles in his thigh and abdomen. Show him some love,” the German player said.
Djokovic has hinted that this may have been his final appearance at the Australian Open.
Over the course of his career, the Serbian has won the tournament 10 times.
