The family of the nine-year-old girl killed in a car crash involving Sekhukhune United’s Shaune Mogaila has denied claims that they approved his return to football. Mogaila, who was arrested in November 2024 for culpable homicide, reckless driving, and fleeing the scene, recently returned to action and scored the winning goal in Sekhukhune’s victory over Chippa United.

Family Speaks Out

Sekhukhune United head coach Lehlohonolo Seema had previously stated that the victim’s family had given their blessings for Mogaila’s return. However, family spokesperson Sifiso Skosana strongly refuted these claims, saying, “We have never met Mogaila, his family, or anyone from Sekhukhune United. The club is lying.”

He further revealed that the girl’s mother, who suffered severe injuries in the crash, was hospitalized for two months and was still recovering, unable to even attend her daughter’s funeral.

Ongoing Legal Battle

Mogaila, who was reportedly under the influence at the time of the accident, initially fled the scene before turning himself in. He was released on R20,000 bail and is set to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on May 19, 2025, as investigations continue.

Mixed Reactions to Mogaila’s Return

Despite the legal case, Mogaila was reinstated into the team and delivered a match-winning performance against Chippa United. His homecoming has caused debate, with many criticising Sekhukhune United's handling of the situation.
