Falconets Crowned Champions After Crushing Ghana 3-0
Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, the Falconets, claimed their first-ever WAFU B U20 Girls Cup title after a convincing 3-0 victory over Ghana’s Black Princesses on Tuesday morning at the Stade Omnisports d’Adjohoun.
Goals from Janet Akekoromowei, Alaba Olabiyi, and Ramotalahi Kareem sealed Nigeria’s triumph, dethroning defending champions Ghana and confirming the Falconets as champions with a game to spare.
The Falconets started with intent, taking control of the match early. Within 17 minutes, Akekoromowei opened the scoring with a stunning long-range free-kick that flew past the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Six minutes later, Olabiyi doubled the lead after capitalizing on a headed assist inside the box.
After the break, Nigeria continued to dominate possession and chances. Kareem made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, finishing off a precise cross from Akekoromowei to net her third goal of the tournament — putting her level with Akekoromowei in the top scorer race.
With this result, Nigeria now sits comfortably atop the standings with nine points from three games, making their final match against hosts Benin Republic a mere formality. Ghana, who had hoped to defend their title after beating Benin 2-0 earlier, were outclassed and ended the competition with six points from four games.
The victory also served as sweet revenge for Nigeria, who lost to Ghana on penalties in the final of the inaugural edition two years ago.
Head coach Moses Aduku praised his side’s composure and teamwork, saying attention would now turn to the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Senegal next February. For now, the Falconets can celebrate being West Africa’s finest.
