Brazilian side Palmeiras is vigorously defending Vitor Roque, who has found himself at the center of a high-profile inquiry following accusations of making homophobic statements. The forward faces a potential suspension ranging from five to ten matches, a blow that could seriously hamper the team’s ambitions in the closing stages of the Brazilian championship and the Copa Libertadores final.
According to Marca, the investigation was triggered by the player’s comment on Instagram, where he used a term considered offensive and interpreted as homophobic in Brazil. In response, the club submitted an appeal to the Brazilian Superior Sports Court (STJD), proposing to resolve the matter through a disciplinary agreement and to substitute any possible suspension with a financial penalty.
The player himself, currently with the Brazilian national team, stated that he had no intention to offend anyone and apologized, explaining it was merely a poorly judged joke. A verdict on the case is set to be announced on Monday, November 17.
