The Lions of Teranga’s campaign is said to have been marked by numerous internal upheavals.

According to reports from Dsports, several sources of tension are said to have weakened the Lions of Teranga at the 2026 World Cup, both within the coaching staff and in relations between the players and the leadership of the Senegalese Football Federation.

Some of the Federation’s officials are reportedly not convinced by Pape Thiaw’s leadership, with some criticising him in particular for a lack of authority within the squad. Several players are also said to have taken issue with Pape Thiaw’s management style. Some knew they were being substituted before the match, whilst others were demanding more playing time.

Dsports reports a climate of mistrust between Pape Thiaw and the Secretary-General of the Senegalese Football Federation, Abdoulaye Sow. Disagreements are said to have flared up between officials even before the start of the tournament, particularly regarding the substantial bonuses awarded to the delegation.

For his part, Pape Gueye is said to have contested certain appointments which he deemed unjustified and is reported to have strongly opposed two members of the Federation during the competition.
