Espérance Tunis Tops Group After Defeating Djoliba, Sets New Continental Records
Espérance Tunis achieved another milestone in African football by claiming their 53rd away win in continental competitions. The team triumphed 1-0 over Djoliba in Bamako, Mali, thanks to a 67th-minute goal from striker Elyes Mokwana in the CAF Champions League Group D match on Sunday.
Espérance has already surpassed clubs like Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Raja Casablanca, TP Mazembe, and Mamelodi Sundowns to become the club with the most away victories in African tournaments. They have now won in 26 African nations, which is more than any other club has ever accomplished.
Espérance has consistently excelled against Malian clubs, remaining unbeaten in seven away matches, including five wins. With their third victory in four encounters against Djoliba, the Tunisian side also extended their record of advancing to the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League 18 times since the group stage format was introduced in 1997.
Espérance is at the top of Group D with 10 points after five games. They will play against Angola’s Sagrada Esperança in their last group match on Saturday at the Rades Olympic Stadium. If they win, they will finish first in the group.
Espérance has won the Champions League four times: in 1994, 2011, 2018, and 2019. They aspire to continue their great performance and win another title to add to their impressive record.
