Enzo Fernández welcomes Mastantuono to Argentina’s senior squad: “He’s a wonderkid”

Franco Mastantuono’s dream is coming true: the 17-year-old River Plate talent has been called up to Argentina’s senior national team for the first time. And among the first to welcome him was Enzo Fernández — World Cup winner and Chelsea star — who just arrived in Argentina ahead of the upcoming FIFA dates.
“We’ll welcome him well, he’s a wonderkid,” said Enzo when asked about the teenage prodigy from his beloved River. “I haven’t spoken to him yet,” he added. The midfielder comes off a successful campaign with Chelsea, having recently lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy.
Fernández also shared a few words about Kevin Lomónaco, another new name on Lionel Scaloni’s list: “I know Kevin, he’s a friend. We’ll be waiting for him there,” he said of the defender currently playing for Independiente.
Another player to land early at Ezeiza was Nicolás Tagliafico. After a solid season with Olympique Lyon, the full-back commented on the new additions to the squad: “Being already qualified gives us the chance to try out more players, which is great for growth.”
“It’s always good to have people who are eager to wear this shirt and experience what it’s like to be part of this group,” added the former Banfield and Independiente player, praising the energy of the newcomers.
The Albiceleste will visit Chile on June 5, then host Colombia on June 10, for matchdays 15 and 16 of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. With qualification already secured, Scaloni’s side will use these matches to fine-tune the squad and build toward the future.
