Enyimba Reject Claims of 50% Salary Cuts After Poor Run
Enyimba FC have strongly denied reports that players’ salaries were slashed by 50% following the club’s poor form in the NPFL, describing the rumour as completely false. The story, which spread widely on social media after a report by Complete Sports, claimed the Nwankwo Kanu-led side imposed salary cuts after their 1-0 home defeat to Wikki Tourists on matchday 13.
The speculation grew after Enyimba suffered their second home loss of the season, prompting the suspension of the coaching crew led by Stanley Eguma. One anonymous player was quoted saying, “They’ve placed us on half salary…” and complaining that no match bonuses had been paid since the season began. The report also alleged that the club issued pay-cut letters to captain Pascal Eze for distribution to teammates.
But Enyimba quickly issued an official statement dismissing the claims. The club said: “The attention of Enyimba Football Club has been drawn to a misleading report… alleging that the club has slashed the salaries of its players by 50%,” stressing that “at no time did the management approve, initiate, or implement any salary reduction.”
The club criticised the lack of fact-checking by the source and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, positive player relations, and focusing on getting back to winning ways.
