EFA confirms Hossam Hassan’s departure as head coach, successor named
Hossam Hassan is officially no longer the head coach of the Egyptian national team.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Saturday 7 November that it had parted ways with the former Egyptian international. Although he made history with the Pharaohs at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and had recently extended his contract, the manager will not be continuing his tenure at the helm of the national team.
In its statement, the Egyptian Football Association said the decision had been taken after reviewing recent circumstances and events, citing their “repercussions and negative impact on the national team’s positive image and stability.”
Following the announcement of Hossam Hassan’s departure, Ali Maher has been appointed manager of the Egyptian national team with immediate effect. He will lead the Pharaohs in their double-header against Malawi as part of the third and fourth matchdays of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Egypt will host Malawi on 13 November before travelling to Malawi on 17 November for the fourth matchday of the qualifiers.
