Edouard Mendy Says Winning AFCON Was 10 Times Better Than Champions League

Former Senegal captain Edouard Mendy has claimed that winning the AFCON with the Three Lions was "10 times better" than winning the Champions League.

Speaking to The Guardian, Mendy reflected on his career after retiring from international football and explained why he considers Senegal’s historic AFCON triumph the biggest achievement of his career.

“[Winning Afcon] was the best moment of my football career: it was 10 times better [than the Champions League]. I can compare now because I’ve also won the Asian Champions League twice.

“To win for your club is something really incredible. But you cannot compare with winning for your country, especially when they have never won anything before. It happens only once in your life so being part of the team that made history was amazing.”

Mendy was part of the Senegal team that won their first AFCON title in 2022, beating Egypt on penalties in the final in Yaoundé.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper has incredible stats, with his club having won the Champions League with Chelsea and two Asian Champions League titles with Al-Ahli.
