For the Senegalese international goalkeeper, there is a clear disconnect between the standard of play on the pitch in Africa and the administrative management.

The controversy surrounding the decision by the African Football Confederation’s Appeal Committee to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco continues to provoke reactions. Edouard Mendy spoke out on this thorny issue on Saturday 28 March following the international friendly between Senegal and Peru at the Stade de France. In his comments, the goalkeeper did not mince his words about the governing body of African football. He openly criticised the CAF’s administrative governance, which he believes is not in line with the ambitions and potential of African football.

The CAF is progressing more slowly than African football itself. The organisation will have to take a long, hard look at itself. African football deserves better leaders.
