Early Derby Clash Sets Stage for Copa do Brasil Drama

The draw for the Round of 16 in the Copa do Brasil has delivered an early showdown between archrivals Corinthians and Palmeiras—a rematch of the recent Campeonato Paulista final. According to UOL, Corinthians' football executive, Fabinho Soldado, acknowledged the challenge but maintained composure: “You don't choose your opponent. They also know the size of Corinthians. We recognize the strength of the adversary and will prepare for our team to play its best football”.
The first leg is set to be played at Neo Química Arena, with the return match at Allianz Parque. While official dates are pending confirmation from the CBF, the fixtures are expected between late July and early August, following the Club World Cup.
Fabinho emphasized the significance of the encounter: “It's a very important classic in Brazilian football. We just played a Paulista final. It will certainly be a very attractive and important classic for the Copa do Brasil. There's a lot of rivalry, and unfortunately, one will be left behind”.
Amid a political crisis at the club, with President Augusto Melo suspended and interim leadership under Osmar Stabile, Fabinho has reaffirmed his commitment to Corinthians. He recently declined an offer from Santos to become their CEO, choosing to focus on maintaining stability within the team. “I have autonomy and support to protect the squad,” he stated.
The upcoming derby promises to be one of the season's most intense battles, as both teams vie for advancement in a competition that leaves no room for error.
