Dreaming of following in Wrexham's footsteps: Famous singer buys seventh-tier English club

Tears for Fears frontman Curt Smith has joined a consortium that has acquired English side Bath City, currently playing in the seventh tier of English football. The musician, known for the hit 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World,' will become the club's ambassador and hopes to help guide the team from amateur football to the professional ranks.

The 65-year-old Smith is a Bath native and used to attend local matches as a child. Now, he has decided to invest in the club alongside businessman Andrew Stalbow. The deal is valued at £6.3 million.

The musician admitted that he wants to emulate the success of Wrexham, who rose from the lower divisions to the Championship following their purchase by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020. Smith, however, emphasized that he doesn't see himself as a star of Reynolds' caliber.

The main goal for Bath City's new owners is to secure promotion to the Football League within five to six years and restore Twerton Park's capacity to around 8,000 spectators. The investors also aim to clear the club's debts and gradually turn it into a professional outfit.
