Aston Villa visited West Ham for their Premier League opener, with summer newcomer Amadou Onana scoring the opening goal in the 4th minute.

Onana's goal became the joint-fastest goal scored by a player in their Premier League debut for Aston Villa, matching Kevin Phillips' strike against Bolton in August 2005. Phillips also scored in the 4th minute of his debut match for the Birmingham club.

Onana joined Aston Villa from Everton in July. The Belgian had an impressive season with the Toffees, quickly becoming a key player in only his second Premier League campaign. His performances earned him a call-up to the Belgian national team for Euro 2024, where he played every minute of all four matches.

In addition to Villa, Onana was also monitored by Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle. There were also reports of interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
