DR Congo U20 Aiming High at AFCON After Long Absence
DR Congo’s U-20 team is preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after securing qualification for the first time since 2013. Head coach Guy Bukasa is determined to lead his squad beyond the group stage and even challenge for a spot at the U-20 World Cup.
"Our goal is to reach the quarter-finals and, if possible, secure a place at the World Cup," Bukasa stated.
The team faces difficulties due to political unrest in DR Congo, which has halted local competitions. However, most players are active with their clubs. The team will play two friendly matches against a formidable opponent during the March FIFA break in order to get ready. Prior to the event, there will be a closed training camp.
Bukasa highlighted the development of Congolese football, citing recent triumphs in club competitions, AFCON, and Women's AFCON. In order to provide a seamless transition for young players, he also collaborates closely with senior coach Sébastien Desabre.
The future of football in the country will be greatly impacted by DR Congo's U-20 AFCON campaign in Côte d'Ivoire.
