Douglas Luiz received a wave of criticism from Juventus fans and even from his teammates

After Douglas Luiz made his first start for Juventus in the match against Empoli (0-0), he was heavily criticized by frustrated fans and even faced calls from his teammates to stop taking dreadful corner kicks.

Details: Since his arrival in Turin, Douglas Luiz had appeared sporadically on the field without making a notable impact. Today, he made his first start, and by halftime with the score at 0-0 against Empoli, the fans were already disappointed.

"I’m starting to seriously question Douglas Luiz…," wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). Another fan even joked that Juventus signed Douglas Luiz as a bonus when they signed Alisha Lehmann, referring to the fact that her partner also joined Juventus Women’s team this summer.

The criticism was particularly harsh from his own team: after a series of dreadful corners that went straight to the goalkeeper, the backlash intensified. One of the corners was taken by Teun Koopmeiners, who made an accurate delivery to Federico Gatti, after which Gatti gestured for Koopmeiners to continue taking corners instead of Luiz.

Notably, Juventus ended their second consecutive match with a 0-0 scoreline. On Tuesday, "La Vecchia Signora" will host Dutch side PSV in their opening UEFA Champions League fixture.
