Dortmund Edge Sundowns in 7-Goal Thriller at Club World Cup

Borussia Dortmund advanced significantly to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 knockout stages on Saturday at TQL Stadium after overcoming a spectacular comeback from Mamelodi Sundowns in the second half to win 4-3.
Early Shock, Rapid Response
South African champions Sundowns took a surprise lead in the 11th minute through a sensational solo run by Lucas Ribeiro, who glided past two defenders before coolly finishing. But Felix Nmecha equalized five minutes later after a goalkeeping blunder by Ronwen Williams.
Dortmund Shift Gears
The Bundesliga side then turned on the style. A flowing move between Julian Brandt and Serhou Guirassy ended with a powerful header to make it 2-1 (34’), before Jobe Bellingham added a third just before halftime after Williams failed to clear a cross.
Sundowns Fight Back Late
Khuliso Mudau's own goal (59') gave Dortmund a 4-1 lead after the interval, apparently securing the victory. The hardy Sundowns, however, would not lie down. Lebo Mothiba scored in the 90th minute to reduce the margin to one, and Iqraam Rayners scored with a valiant header on the rebound (62').
Cardoso: "Pride Despite the Loss"
Despite falling short, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso praised his team:
"We take away disappointment, but also pride. We showed we belong at this level and earned respect."
