Spain and Cape Verde played out a 0-0 draw in their opening Group Stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the African side matching yet another historic record.

Details: According to MisterChip (Alexis), Cape Verde committed just one foul during the match against Spain. It is the fewest fouls recorded by any team in a FIFA World Cup match since 1966, when full tournament broadcasts first became available.

Before this, the lowest tally had been recorded in two matches:

  • Costa Rica – 3 fouls (against Germany, 2022)
  • Germany – 3 fouls (against Chile, 1974)

As a reminder: Spain’s forward also rewrote the tournament’s history by matching an unwanted record that had stood since 1966.
