Mercedes driver George Russell was forced to retire early from the Belgian Grand Prix—the tenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship. The Briton was out of the race on the very first lap after coming into contact with his compatriot Lewis Hamilton.
The incident unfolded during the opening phase of the race. After a fierce battle among several drivers up front, Russell and Hamilton tangled for track position, sending George's car spinning into the gravel and leaving it damaged.
Russell's car was left undrivable, making it impossible for him to continue. For one of the championship's top contenders, the race at Spa was over almost before it began.
