Diego Hernández arrived in Chile as a marquee signing for Everton, but his spell in Viña del Mar is set to end quietly. The 24-year-old Uruguayan midfielder, on loan from Botafogo, will return to Brazil when his loan expires at the end of June, according to reporter Diego Peralta on X.
Hernández’s time in the Primera División began with promise. He scored a stunning goal in the Copa Chile and earned a call-up to Uruguay’s senior national team. But in league play, he failed to score and registered just one assist. Rumors about off-field issues, dismissed by the squad as false, added to a turbulent campaign.
With Botafogo unwilling to extend the loan, Hernández leaves without having made the impact many anticipated. Once seen as a potential star in Chilean football, his departure is a reminder that early hype doesn’t always translate to lasting success on the pitch.
