On Wednesday, March 18, the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg between Newcastle and Barcelona produced a controversial moment.

Details: Late in the first half, Newcastle launched an attack, with Anthony Elanga making a run in behind João Cancelo. The Barcelona defender appeared to make contact, and Elanga went down, but the referee waved play on. After a VAR review, the officials stood by their original decision.

Incidentally, Lamine Yamal failed to deal with one of the situations and attempted an ill-advised backheel pass, which ultimately led to Newcastle’s goal.

Reminder: The first leg between the two sides, played in England last week, ended in a 1–1 draw. The winner of this tie will face either Atlético Madrid or Tottenham.
