Di María explained his decision to suspend his international career
The Argentine winger Ángel Di María commented on his decision to suspend his international career after the 2024 Copa America.
"My decision has been made. Earlier, some wanted me to leave, and now they want me to stay. After everything I have achieved with the national team, I can leave with a calm mind.
On the other hand, it hurts because the national team is where I feel the happiest. When you put on the national team jersey, you think only about defending your country. I have given everything for Argentina for 15 years, and many young players deserve the chance to wear this jersey.
It is time to step aside. I can begin to realize that there is life outside of football," Di María said in an interview with L'Equipe.
Di María announced his decision to leave the national team in October 2023. In 144 matches for Argentina, he scored 31 goals and provided 32 assists.
The 36-year-old became a World Cup champion with Argentina in 2022, as well as a Copa America winner in 2021, a Finalissima winner in 2022, and an Olympic champion in 2008.
On the night of July 15, Argentina will face Colombia in the 2024 Copa America final.
