Demichelis Reflects on Emotional Match Against Gallardo’s River at Club World Cup
Martín Demichelis is preparing for one of the most emotional matches of his career. The Rayados de Monterrey head coach will face River Plate, the club where he began his journey as a footballer, in the second match of Group E at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The game is scheduled for Saturday, June 21 at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. Demichelis shared his thoughts on the upcoming encounter in an interview with TN Deportivo.
“It will be a special match for me. I developed as a player and as a person within that institution. I played in River’s youth divisions, became a professional there, finished school, started college, and then was transferred abroad. When I arrived in Europe, I always said I wanted to represent River well,” said the Argentine coach when asked about his ties to the club.
Speaking to FIFA’s official website, he added: “I played for the Argentine national team, always in some way representing River. I returned to the club 20 years later, this time as a manager, and won titles. That’s where I come from. It will be a special game.”
Monterrey earned their spot in the expanded Club World Cup through an impressive continental campaign, while River qualified as 2023 Copa Libertadores champions. The clash not only promises high-level football, but also deep emotional significance as two River icons, Demichelis and Marcelo Gallardo, meet on opposite benches.
