Hugo Broos' selection for Bafana Bafana's opening match in the COSAFA Cup turned out to be quite a surprise.
Details: Yesterday, the South African national team played their debut match of this COSAFA Cup season against Mozambique.
Given that, on paper, Bafana Bafana were clear favorites, the head coach made a rather unexpected choice for the starting lineup.
Making their first-ever appearances for the national team were Takasani Mbadjwa, Ime Okon, Gape Moralo (all three from SuperSport United), Kabelo Dlamini of Orlando Pirates, and Sanele Burns.
It’s worth noting that this experiment didn’t go entirely as planned—the 73-year-old Belgian’s team suffered a sensational defeat to Mozambique, the rank outsiders, throwing the group wide open for the upcoming matches.
