Last weekend was a very fiery weekend and a lot of things happened in the world of football that should not be missed. Dailysports will tell you what the weekend was all about in our traditional digest.

Liverpool and Chelsea played for the first trophy of the season in England

On 25 February, the English League Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea took place at Wembley in London, where the teams battled for the first trophy of the season in English football.

The teams scored no goals in regulation time. In extra-time, neither scored goals, and it seemed that the game would go to a penalty shootout, but Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal on 118 minutes, which set several achievements.

Firstly, we know for sure that Jürgen Klopp will finish his final season at Liverpool with a trophy, even despite further results in the Premier League and Champions League.

Secondly, Chelsea have established a reputation as the major underdog of English cups, becoming the first club to lose six consecutive finals of these tournaments. The Aristocrats failed to win the League Cup in 2019, 2022 and 2024, while they failed to win the FA Cup in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Manchester United without Højlund lost at home to Fulham for the first time in 20 years

But not only the League Cup final marked the weekend in England, because in the Foggy Albion also held matches of the 26th round of the Premier League, of which we will note a few meetings, one of them - the confrontation between Manchester United and Fulham.

For the game against the "cottagers" team Erik ten Hag came out without their main goalscorer of recent weeks - Rasmus Hojlund, who will miss 2–3 weeks due to injury and without him “red devils” at home could not outplay the London team.

Even Harry Maguire's first goal in the current Premier League campaign, which set the score at 1-1 on 89 minutes, didn't help, Fulham at the end of the match for the first time in 20 years managed to pull out a victory from Old Trafford, and in general, the "cottagers" have not beaten the "Red Devils" a little more than 14 years.

For Manchester United, the loss to the London team was the first in the current year. Ten Hag's wards suffered their first defeat in eight matches.

Arsenal "congratulated" Karius on his return to the Premier League

After a frankly failed performance in the 2018 Champions League final in Kyiv, Liverpool, for whom Loris Karius played, sent him on loan, first to Besiktas, then to German Union, and in September 2022 he signed a contract with Newcastle, but on debut for the "forty" in the Premier League, and, as a consequence, the return to the English league had to wait almost a year and a half.

Return to the Premier League happened on 24 February 2024 in the away match of Newcastle against Arsenal, in which the German received from Eddie Howe a place in the main squad. True, the debut for the "forty" in the Premier League at Karius did not go well. "Canaries" "congratulated" the 30-year-old goalkeeper on his return with four goals, to which Newcastle responded with only one goal.

Bayern won for the first time in four matches

It's a rather unusual picture to see Bayern consistently losing, isn't it? By the match of the 23rd round of the Bundesliga against RB Leipzig, Munich approached with a series of three defeats in a row (if you take into account the Champions League game with Lazio), and hopes to break this streak of failures team Thomas Tuchel pinned in the match with the Bulls.

“Recordmeister” opened the scoring on 56 minutes through Kane, but RB Leipzig equalised 14 minutes later. That scoreline held until the end of regulation time, but the English goalkeeper managed to snatch a 2-1 win for his team, which broke a three-match losing streak.

Two assists from Reus did not help Borussia Dortmund keep their winless streak intact

Another streak in the Bundesliga was broken this weekend, but it was a positive one. Borussia Dortmund had been unbeaten in ten official games in the German league against Hoffenheim and were looking to extend that streak.

The match started badly for Edin Terzić's team, the Bumblebees conceded in the second minute, but by 25 minutes at Signal Iduna Park the hosts were able to take the lead thanks to two assists from Marco Reus.

In the second half, Sinsheim forward Maximillian Bayer fired in a duo of goals to give Hoffenheim a 3-2 win in Dortmund.

Ronaldo has a beef with Saudi fans over Messi

For the second time in February, An Nasr winger Cristiano Ronaldo has had a falling out with the Saudi Arabian crowd, all because of Lionel Messi.

Earlier, the Portuguese wiped himself with Al-Hilal's scarf after fans chanted the reigning Ballon d'Or winner's name every time he touched the ball in a game against that team, and in last weekend's match against Al-Shabab, Ronaldo defiantly put his left hand to his ear and then waved his right hand twice at his groin in response to shouts of the Portuguese's name, prompting the local league's disciplinary committee to launch an investigation into the Portuguese.

If we remember about Messi, we note that the Argentine last weekend marked the first goal in the new season of MLS. Lionel's goal earned Inter a draw with Miami vs. LA Galaxy (1-1).
