Cupido’s Last-Gasp Goal Rescues Stellenbosch in 1-1 Draw Against Polokwane City
Stellenbosch FC snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership on Friday night, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Ashley Cupido. The thrilling encounter at the Danie Craven Stadium saw Stellies deny the visitors what would have been a hard-fought victory.
Polokwane City, determined to avenge their Nedbank Cup defeat to Stellenbosch two weeks ago, looked set to take all three points after Bonginkosi Dlamini’s well-taken goal in the 51st minute. The winger capitalized on a precise counter-attack led by Mokibelo Ramabu, who provided a low cross into the box, allowing Dlamini to slot the ball past Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
Stellies had 70% of the ball and controlled possession, but they were unable to overcome Polokwane's unwavering defense. With crucial saves to maintain his team ahead, Equatoguinean goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga upset the hosts with the visitors' defensive discipline.
However, Stellenbosch’s persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Cupido, who had come on as a second-half substitute, struck the crucial equalizer. It marked his fourth goal in as many matches, cementing his status as a key figure in Stellies’ attacking line.
The draw means Stellenbosch remain in fifth place on the log with 28 points, three behind Polokwane City, who sit fourth with 31 points. With two games in hand, Stellies still have a chance to climb into the top three.
