Cuca Critical of Lyanco’s Red Card, Reveals Halftime Warning to Defender
Atlético Mineiro’s goalless draw against São Paulo on Sunday wasn’t without controversy, as defender Lyanco saw red after picking up two yellow cards. Speaking post-match, head coach Cuca expressed concern over the player’s impulsive behavior and admitted it’s becoming a known weakness that opponents are beginning to exploit. Source: Galo TV.
Lyanco first went into the book after pushing São Paulo’s Ferreirinha in the 33rd minute, and later received his second yellow for a challenge on Ferraresi. Cuca noted that the defender “fell into a trap,” with São Paulo’s players intentionally provoking him. “You can’t afford to react like that. These are experienced players, they know his temper and went looking for that second card,” said the coach.
The Atlético boss revealed that he spoke with Lyanco during halftime to warn him about the risks. “It was a big concern. We talked in the dressing room and told him to be careful. He had to avoid putting himself in that situation again,” he said.
Despite the criticism, Cuca also praised Lyanco’s intensity and fighting spirit. “He’s a very good player, important for us. We need to work on a few things, but we can’t take away what makes him special,” he concluded.
With the suspension, Lyanco will miss Atlético’s next match against Vitória on Sunday, April 13, at the Mineirão in the third round of the Brazilian league.
