After lifting the Concacaf Champions Cup, Cruz Azul is already reshaping its squad ahead of the Apertura 2025. As reported by EFE, sporting director Iván Alonso confirmed that strikers Giorgios Giakoumakis and Gabriel Fernández will not be part of the upcoming campaign.
"There are several inquiries for both Gabriel and Gio," Alonso said in a press conference. "We’ll decide what’s best for all parties." The club is actively managing departures as it prepares to welcome reinforcements.
One major target is Serbian striker Luka Jovic, who has played for top European sides like Real Madrid, Benfica, and AC Milan. Alonso described the pursuit as “a dream” for the club: “He’s a player we’ve analyzed thoroughly. Not the only option, but certainly a big wish for us.”
Cruz Azul, coached by Nicolás Larcamón, kicks off its season on July 12 against Mazatlán at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, followed by a trip to face Atlas at Estadio Jalisco. With key changes underway, the team looks to start strong with a refreshed lineup.
