Despite Aston Villa controlling possession for most of the time, it was the Austrian visitors who struck first. After a disastrous giveaway by an Aston Villa player, Salzburg launched a swift attack that set up Karim Konaté for a shot. While his effort seemed far from perfect, Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf made matters worse by inadvertently deflecting the ball into his own net.
Lindelöf made a questionable decision, essentially redirecting Konaté's cross straight into the goal himself. Nevertheless, the official match report credited the goal to Karim Konaté.
At the moment, the score remains 0-1 in favor of Salzburg, who absolutely must win tonight to reach the playoffs. For Aston Villa, however, this match holds no tournament significance.
