Couldn’t withstand the competition in Manchester. James Trafford may move to Newcastle
Newcastle have once again reached out to representatives of Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford—the 23-year-old England international who is pushing for a winter move after his return to Manchester City turned into a major disappointment.
Details: According to TeamTalk, Newcastle, who already tried to sign Trafford in the summer for £20 million, are ready to revive the deal: the club is discussing a loan with an obligation to buy for £25 million, though a permanent transfer is also on the table. Eddie Howe sees him as a key reinforcement after Nick Pope’s injury and amid a shortage of reliable goalkeepers.
Tottenham and West Ham are also monitoring the situation, but Newcastle hold the advantage thanks to previous negotiations and their ambitious project backed by Saudi investors.
Trafford joined City from Burnley for £20 million this summer, aiming to become Ederson’s understudy and to fight for the No. 1 spot. But everything changed dramatically when the club signed Gianluigi Donnarumma for £40 million on the final day of the transfer window.
The goalkeeper is eager for more game time, describing this period as a “lost year” that has stalled his development and jeopardized his chances of making England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
This season, the shot-stopper has featured in only five matches for the Citizens, keeping a clean sheet in just two of them.
Reminder: Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland hosted a celebration for his national teammates after a historic win over Estonia, treating everyone to cheeseburgers.
