Could Sporting appoint a new manager? Porto fans will not be happy!
Lisbon club Sporting are exploring the possibility of appointing 51-year-old Portuguese coach Sérgio Conceição as their new head coach if the club decides to part ways with Rui Borges.
Details: According to Italian insider Niccolò Schira, the Lions' board are considering a change in the dugout due to inconsistent results and the challenges the team has faced during a crucial stretch of the season. Rui Borges, who took charge of Sporting after Rúben Amorim's departure, is under serious pressure following the club's slump in the domestic league.
If Borges's contract is terminated, Sporting's hierarchy will make former Porto boss Sérgio Conceição their top candidate. Sérgio Conceição is currently without a club and is ready to consider an offer from the green-and-whites despite his past with Porto. Talks are at an early stage and will depend on Sporting's results in their next few matches.
Despite a 3-1 victory over Galatasaray in the opening round of the Champions League, Sporting then drew twice in the domestic league — 1-1 with Famalicão and 2-2 with Arouca. After seven matches, Sporting sit third with 15 points.
