The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has announced a change in its rules. From January 1, 2025, female tennis players will have the right to paid maternity leave for a period of one year, reports Bild.

This program has been made possible with the support of Saudi Arabia through the Public Investment Fund (PIF). This is crucial, as previously, tennis players faced significant financial losses due to pregnancy, as they were temporarily unable to compete and therefore could not earn money.

"Independent contractors and self-employed individuals typically do not qualify for this type of maternity benefit. That is why our program is truly groundbreaking, and for the first time in the history of women's sports, independent, self-employed athletes will receive comprehensive maternity benefits," said WTA leader Portia Archer.

It should be noted that tennis players who become mothers through partner pregnancy or adoption will also be able to receive financial support during a two-month child care leave without the need to step onto the court.
