Memphis Depay's return to the Netherlands national team was far from what was expected. The Corinthians forward scored a penalty goal but couldn't prevent elimination in the Nations League quarter-finals against Spain, nor could he escape the harsh criticism from Dutch fans who severely questioned his performance on social media.
Despite the penalty converted, fans accused him of losing too many balls, appearing out of shape, and even joked about whether he would fit into an under-14 team, as reported by O Globo.
With 100 international matches under his belt and just three goals shy of matching Van Persie as the Oranje's all-time top scorer, his performance left more questions than answers.
At Corinthians, where he has been warmly welcomed, they hope this episode won't affect his current form in Brazil, where the club has placed a big bet on him to lead their attack in 2025.
