Cordova Emerges as Favorite to Replace Gareca in Chile Hot Seat
Ricardo Gareca’s tenure with the Chilean national team is hanging by a thread after yet another disappointing result. Following a goalless draw against Ecuador that leaves La Roja bottom of the CONMEBOL table, former Chilean internationals are calling for a change and have already picked their preferred replacement.
Jorge Aravena and Gabriel “Coca” Mendoza believe Nicolás Córdova should take over, according to RedGol. Córdova, currently managing Chile’s U20 squad, is seen as someone who knows the young talent and understands the current state of Chilean football. “He’s been working with the youth for years and knows the players,” Aravena said. “I fully agree with the work he’s doing.”
Mendoza added that economic constraints make Córdova the most viable option: “Why spend more money? Let him finish the cycle and focus on the next qualifiers.” Gareca, meanwhile, has refused to resign and even suggested continuing until 2030, sparking further backlash. With pressure mounting, the ANFP may soon be forced to act.
