Controversy Erupts over Egyptian Player Star's promotion of betting app

Former Egypt international Mohamed Zidan has received widespread backlash for appearing in a promotional video for an online betting app. Religious figures, fans and sports media have criticised his role, accusing him of promoting negative behaviours related to gambling.

Sports journalist Medhat Shalaby described the situation as “catastrophic”, saying it was dangerous for non-religious reasons, particularly its potential impact on Egypt’s youth. Social media users echoed these concerns, with one person saying Zidan was “destroying lives” by promoting gambling, which they believe will lead to financial loss and social instability.

While a religious scholar criticised Zidane’s actions as religiously impermissible, a legal expert explained that existing Egyptian laws make physical gambling venues illegal but not online betting. However, Qutb called for legal updates to address the new risks of online gambling.

The controversy comes amid increased scrutiny of betting apps in Egypt, which authorities have linked to criminal activity. Parliament has urged stricter regulations and a complete ban on illegal gambling apps, including those disguised as games for children.
