Controversial refereeing decisions and a magnificent Bayındır. Manchester United advance past Arsenal in the FA Cup on penalties

Arsenal hosted Manchester United at the Emirates in the third round of the FA Cup.

The first half ended without any goals, but the second half saw both teams exchange strikes. Bruno Fernandes gave the visitors the lead, but just 10 minutes later, Gabriel equalized for the Gunners.

Before that, United were reduced to 10 men, with Diogo Dalot receiving a second yellow card and being sent off.

Then came a highly controversial refereeing decision. The referee awarded a penalty to United in the 72nd minute, which Martin Ødegaard failed to convert. However, the incident seemed to be a dive by Kai Havertz.

Notably, this was the first time in Ødegaard’s professional career that he missed a penalty in an official match.

There were no more goals during regular time, and the match went into extra time, but neither team could find a winner.

The participant for the next round was decided by a penalty shootout. Manchester United converted all of their attempts, while Kai Havertz was unable to beat Bayındır. United advanced to the next round.
