Antonio Conte's hopes of taking over at Old Trafford appear to have suffered a major blow.

Details: According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are not expected to appoint Antonio Conte if the club decides to replace Michael Carrick. Senior figures reportedly believe the experienced Italian does not fit the structure and working model the club wants to maintain.

Conte had been repeatedly linked with the Manchester United job during the difficult start to the season under Carrick. The Italian is currently available and reports earlier this month suggested he would be open to returning to the Premier League, but the latest information indicates that United's hierarchy is looking for a different managerial profile.

The Telegraph also reports that Julian Nagelsmann is expected to be among the leading candidates if Manchester United eventually make a change. Pressure on Carrick has increased sharply after the 4-1 Champions League defeat away to Como, which extended United's winless run in all competitions to seven matches.

It is worth noting that Conte is currently unattached after leaving Napoli in the summer of 2026. The 57-year-old has previously won the Premier League with Chelsea and Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter and Napoli.
