In the first leg of the play-off, Real Madrid edged Benfica 1–0, but the match was overshadowed by a major controversy following alleged racist abuse directed at Vinícius.

Details: In the 52nd minute, Vinícius Júnior moved to leave the pitch after hearing racist insults from an opponent. He initially refused to continue the match. The game was halted for ten minutes before Vinícius ultimately decided to return to the field, allowing the referee to restart play.

According to ESPN, UEFA have opened an investigation into the alleged racist abuse aimed at Vinícius. The probe is seen as a consequence of the long-standing pattern of racial discrimination the Brazilian has faced in European football.

It has also reignited the global debate over the sport’s inability to adequately protect players from hate crimes.

Meanwhile, the head of world football admitted he was shocked and saddened by reports of racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior. Gianni Infantino stressed that such expressions of hatred are unacceptable both in sport and in modern society.

Reminder: The racist scandal that erupted during the Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid has moved beyond the boundaries of sporting jurisdiction.
