Confusion surrounds the organisation of the 2026 African Women's Cup of Nations
The final phase of the African Women's Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place from 17 March to 3 April 2026.
However, with one month to go before the tournament kicks off in Morocco, contradictory statements from South Africa are casting doubt on the situation. South Africa's Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, said on Sunday 1 February 2026 that South Africa would take over from Morocco in organising the 2026 African Women's Cup of Nations.
This statement was quickly contradicted by the South African Ministry of Sport, which stated that no decision had been made. "South Africa has expressed its willingness to support CAF if necessary, in the event that a change of host country for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations proves essential. These commitments are part of ongoing discussions led by CAF, which is examining various options in line with its responsible management of continental football. To date, no official decision has been taken regarding a possible relocation of the tournament, and Morocco remains the designated host country for the 2026 African Women's Cup of Nations. CAF has not yet initiated any procedure to change the host country," the ministry said in a statement.
The Confederation of African Football has not yet responded.
