Health problems have prevented French defender Raphael Varane from having a long career as a footballer and he has decided to hang up his boots at the age of 31.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender released an appeal to his fans on his Instagram page, where he emphasised that he had set the bar high during his career but his body told him to stop:

‘I set the highest expectations for myself, I want to leave strong and not just hang on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and instinct. Desire and need are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times and this time it was the moment to stop and hang my boots on the rack, winning the trophy at Wembley in my last game.’

Varane's last club was Italy's Como, who didn't even register him for the Serie A season due to injury, while his CV also includes Lens, Real Madrid and Manchester United.
