Raúl Asencio's legal troubles have finally forced his own club's hand: Real Madrid have opened a disciplinary file against the defender.

Details: According to COPE, the club will investigate the 23 year old centre-back. The move comes hours after confirmation that Asencio was convicted of drink-driving in Gran Canaria, fined €14,400 and banned from driving for eight months following an incident on August 16.

The conviction is only the latest layer of a deepening crisis around the Canarian. He was more than three times over the legal alcohol limit when stopped, and he was not with the squad at the time because he was recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in late July. Far more seriously, Asencio is due to stand trial on September 3, 4 and 7 over the alleged sharing of an explicit video recorded without consent, with the prosecutor seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison term, a case hanging over him since his days in Madrid's youth setup. Until now the club had publicly backed him, and he remained part of the first-team picture, but the disciplinary file signals that patience at the Bernabéu is wearing thin. What sanctions the investigation could bring, from a fine to suspension from squad duties, remains to be seen.

It's worth noting that Asencio made his breakthrough during the injury crises of the last two seasons, stepping in when Militão and Carvajal were out, which makes this fall from grace all the more dramatic.

Reminder: Here we go! Fulham reach agreement to sign Real Madrid midfielder Manuel Ángel.
