Chivas Sack Espinoza After Failing to Reach Playoffs Chivas Sack Espinoza After Failing to Reach Playoffs

Chivas have parted ways with head coach Gerardo Espinoza after failing to qualify for the postseason in the 2025 Clausura, ESPN reported on Monday. Sporting director Javier Mier confirmed the decision just two days after a 1-1 draw against local rivals Atlas.

Espinoza's tenure was brief and underwhelming, lasting just 49 days and encompassing nine matches across all competitions. He secured only two wins after taking over from Óscar García Junyent, who was also dismissed earlier this season.

The club ended the regular season in 11th place with a 5W-6D-6L record. Despite being level on 21 points with Pumas, Chivas missed out on the final play-in spot due to inferior goal difference.

This marks yet another coaching change for the Guadalajara-based giants, who will now search for their 33rd manager (including interim appointments) since the Vergara family assumed ownership in October 2002.

Chivas' last Liga MX title dates back to the 2017 Clausura under Matías Almeyda, one of only two top-flight championships the club has claimed in the 21st century.

The managerial shuffle highlights the club’s ongoing struggle to recapture its former glory. Heading into the 2025 Apertura, Chivas once again faces a period of uncertainty and rebuilding.
