Chippa Aim to Spoil the Party as Sundowns Target Eighth Straight Title
Chippa United and title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns will square off in a crucial matchup this Wednesday at Buffalo City Stadium in East London in a Betway Premiership matchup.
'The Sky Is the Limit'
Buzz is building around the fixture, with stadium posters boldly declaring: “The sky is the limit – don’t miss this one.” Fans in East London will get a rare chance to witness the reigning champions up close in a match that could seal the league title.
Sundowns One Step from Glory
On Sunday, Sundowns took a massive step toward clinching their eighth consecutive PSL title, crushing Stellenbosch FC 3-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Under new coach Miguel Cardoso, the Brazilians are now just one point away from officially securing the crown.
A win or draw against Chippa would mathematically seal the title, though the official trophy presentation will only take place Sunday at Loftus Versfeld against Magesi United.
Ruthless Form and Clean Sheets
Sundowns have won five straight league matches, recording four clean sheets in the process:
- vs Richards Bay (3-0)
- vs Cape Town City (2-0)
- vs Chippa United (3-0)
- vs Stellenbosch FC (3-0)
They currently sit 15 points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have five games remaining.
Chippa Still Hoping for Historic Upset
Despite their recent poor form, Chippa United — winless in five — remain hopeful. Head coach Thabo September is targeting a top-eight finish and plans to begin building for the 2025–26 season:
“We need to be as professional as can be to finish this season on a good note,” he said.
“Top 8 – if it’s possible – we have two games. If we get four points out of the two games, then it’s possible.”
Chippa are expected to miss midfield duo Siphelo Baloni and Andile Jali through injury.
What’s at Stake
- Sundowns: One point from clinching the league
- Chippa United: Chasing a top-eight finish and their first-ever league win over Sundowns
All eyes now turn to East London for what could be a historic evening for South African football.
